## Displays

## Keyboard and Mouse

## Docking Station

Docking stations are typically not recommended except for developers or creatives. A MacBook + Apple Display provides end users with at least 6 USB-C ports of connectivity. This is amply sufficient for the needs of the overwhelming majority of users.

Users who do need additional connectivity are typically creatives. A typical use case is needing to connect 2 or more displays alongside 2 or more USB-C or Thunderbolt SSDs. MacBook Pro’s have three Thunderbolt ports which isn’t sufficient for this need.

We recommend a ThunderBolt 4 or ThunderBolt 5 dock or hub. The following models are recommended:

## Cables

Only certified Apple cables are recommended. If possible only purchase cables directly from Apple or from reputable known partners such as Belkin or Anker. Some workflows, such as [resetting a Mac in DFU mode](https://support.meissa.net/space/CD/2139553793/Restoring+an+Apple+Silicon+Mac+Using+DFU+Blaster+and+Apple+Configurator), may not work with 3rd party cables.

## Capture Cards

For capturing video output from Mac computers, including pre-login states such as macOS Setup Assistant, Recovery, and Automated Device Enrollment flows where on-device screen recording is not possible, our primary recommendation is the **Magewell USB Capture HDMI 4K Pro**. It is fully driverless on macOS, appearing instantly in QuickTime Player, OBS Studio, and any other capture application with no software installation. Its SmartEDID function allows a custom EDID to be loaded onto the device, so the source Mac negotiates an identical output resolution every session, which is essential when capturing machines whose display settings cannot be changed. Its hardware front end also re-locks reliably through the display renegotiations Macs perform during startup. One platform note: Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps), so the device operates at 10 Gbps on macOS, which still delivers 4K60 capture; always use the included Magewell USB cable and connect directly to a Thunderbolt port rather than through a hub.

The **Magewell USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus** is our secondary option and was the de facto industry standard for portable HDMI capture for years. It shares the same driverless operation and EDID customization through Magewell's USB Capture Utility, with the main difference being a 4K30 capture ceiling (4K60 input is accepted and scaled). For documenting user interfaces, enrollment workflows, and support sessions, 4K30 or 1080p60 is more than sufficient, making the Plus a sensible choice when the Pro is unavailable or the price difference matters.

As an honorable mention, the **Atomos Ninja TX** is a standalone monitor-recorder rather than a capture card: it records ProRes or H.265 directly to CFexpress Type B cards or external USB-C SSDs with no computer required, making it excellent for on-site capture. Note that it records one clip per continuous signal (a reboot mid-flow closes the clip and recording must be restarted) and it honors HDCP, so protected content will display black by design. Finally, a caution on the popular **Elgato 4K X**: it is a strong value, but Mac users routinely run into limitations. EDID settings can only be changed from Elgato's Windows-only 4K Capture Utility, HDR capture is not available on macOS (HDR sources are converted to SDR), full 10 Gbps operation on a Mac must be enabled through a non-obvious hidden setting (the device otherwise runs at 5 Gbps, limiting capture quality), and its signal handling is less tolerant of the renegotiations that occur during Mac startup. For consistent, repeatable capture from Apple devices, we recommend the Magewell hardware above.

# Network, Data, & Phone Infrastructure

Meissa standardizes on Ubiquiti UniFi for the network and infrastructure layer, and we fully support it as part of our managed service. Running one UniFi stack (gateway, switching, wireless, and storage) gives us a single management plane, consistent firmware and security policy across sites, and no per-device or per-feature licensing to track. The recommendations below reflect the specific models we deploy and support in business environments.

## Firewall

For the gateway and firewall, we recommend the [UniFi Dream Machine Beast](https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/cloud-gateways-large-scale/products/udm-beast) (UDM-BEAST). It runs the full UniFi platform (Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect) on a single device, with roughly 25 Gbps of IDS/IPS throughput and support for 7,500 or more clients, plus extensive 10GbE and 25GbE connectivity.

## Switching

UniFi Pro XG PoE line:

- [Pro XG 10 PoE](https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/switching-professional-max-xg/products/usw-pro-xg-10-poe)
- [Pro XG 24 PoE](https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/switching-professional-max-xg/products/usw-pro-xg-24)
- [Pro XG 48 PoE](https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/switching-professional-max-xg/products/usw-pro-xg-48-poe)

These are Layer 3, 10 GbE RJ45 switches with PoE+++ output and SFP+ uplinks, delivering up to 90W per port, which is what lets a single copper run both connect and power high-draw devices like the E7 access points and PoE cameras.
